Kevin Lamoureux steps down as MLA, and campaigns to be Member of Parliament for Winnipeg North. Thank you Kevin. Good Luck. You have my full support.
Today, Kevin Lamoureux steps down as MLA for Inkster. He was first elected in 1988 and has now served 18 years as a member of our Manitoba Legislature. During this time Kevin has made numerous and major contributions.
He has always worked tenaciously on behalf of his constituents. He is always ready and open to help and meets his constituents every week at McDonald's restaurant. He has helped many, many people with immigration issues. He has worked continually to ensure the highest quality health care in the north of Winnipeg, and particularly when cutbacks in service at Seven Oaks Hospital were brought in by the NDP, or when the Brooklands Medical Centre closed. He has worked persistently to improve the community and to make it safer supporting community policing efforts and youth justice committees when the NDP have cut back in these areas.
Kevin regularly meets with and helps those in the Sikh community in Inkster and indeed in Manitoba. In 1999, on behalf of the Sikh community in his constituency, he introduced a resolution recognizing the 300th anniversary of the occasion on April 13th, 1699 when the Tenth Master Guru Gobind Singh established Khalsa, the Order of Pure Beings, a very important anniversary for the Sikh community. The resolution recognized the importance of April 13th, and also recognized the contribution that Canadian Sikhs have made to our province and country. The resolution was passed unanimously.
Kevin works closely with the Philippine community in Manitoba. He has visited the Philippines and helped many from the Philippines to come to Manitoba. On May 26, 2009, Kevin Lamoureux introduced a resolution to recognize the 50th anniversary of the Filipino community in Manitoba and to acknowledge the valuable contributions that members of the Filipino community have made which has greatly enhance the quality of life for all Manitobans. This resolution was passed unanimously.
For the Ukrainian community, Kevin and I introduced a resolution to recognize that the internment, disenfranchisement and related repressive measures taken against Canadians of Ukrainian origin between 1914 and 1920 were unwarranted and unjust and to encourage the government of Manitoba to consider supporting the Ukrainian Canadian community in developing forward-looking proposals that will help commemorate their historical experience and educate Canadians about their history in order to highlight and commemorate the contributions that the Ukrainian Canadian community has made to Canada and to promote a cross-cultural understanding and shared sense of Canadian identity. This resolution also passed unanimously.
Kevin and I have worked closely together on many, many issues and promoting many causes for the benefit of people in Manitoba.
Among our efforts were:
1) The introduction and passage of The Apology Act to help improve our ability to deal with medical errors and other areas where mistakes are made.
2) The establishment of the first Sunday after Labour Day as Grandparents Day in Manitoba
3) Addressing the health of children by ending smoking in cars with children.
4) Calling for various other measures to support the health of children including measures to prevent FASD and measures to improve nutrition and have fairer milk prices in northern Manitoba
5) Standing up for Crocus shareholders and calling for a Public Inquiry into the Crocus Scandal.
and many other initiatives.
Good luck Kevin in your new endeavor. I am fully supportive, and I am with you all the way in your efforts to become the next Member of Parliament in Winnipeg North.
